Experience the Future of Blue Lagoon through Nature and Ancestry Exploration

Comino’s Blue Lagoon, like many beautiful places globally, suffers from overcrowding and environmental stress. With an average TripAdvisor rating of 3.7 stars, concerns have risen about its future appeal. Mizzi Studio, a design firm based in Malta and London, is leading efforts to rejuvenate the site.

Reviving Blue Lagoon’s Natural Beauty

Preserving the Garrigue Landscape

Mizzi Studio proposes restoring traditional rubble walls to protect sensitive ecological areas. Additionally, checkpoints along trails aim to safeguard the 35,000 square meters of garrigue landscape.

Enhancing Swimming Zones

The plan suggests extending the Blue Lagoon swimming areas by 20%, including replacing the current jetty with a floating pontoon to protect marine life.

Reducing Concrete Structures

Concrete surfaces will be removed and replaced with locally sourced stone, promoting a natural aesthetic and ensuring safer access with corrosive-free resin railings.

Establishing an Information Center

An existing building will be transformed into an information and enforcement hub, featuring updated facilities, surveillance, and first-aid services. Waste management improvements are also on the agenda.

Kiosk Redesign Initiative

  • Limit kiosks to a single, nature-inspired stone structure.
  • Sell only water and ice cream to reduce waste.

The main food offerings will move inland, utilizing a design that blends nature, craft, and technology.

Supporting Local Produce

The reimagined food services will champion local produce such as watermelons, citrus fruits, and pomegranates. The initiative aims to support local farmers and provide tourists with authentic experiences. It also envisions a plastic-free operation, offering drinks in biodegradable or souvenir ‘Comino Cups.’

Jonathan Mizzi advocates for Malta to balance its attractiveness with sustainable practices. By integrating sensitive architecture and ecological design, the island can set a precedent in sustainable tourism.
