Plans for Blue Lagoon rehabilitation submitted to Planning Authority

An application for the rehabilitation of Blue Lagoon in Comino has been submitted to the Planning Authority, marking a significant step in protecting one of Malta’s cherished natural landmarks.

Plans for Blue Lagoon Rehabilitation

Submitted by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), the project aims to blend ecological restoration with improved visitor facilities. Mizzi Studio designed the proposal, which is presently in its initial stages.

Key Objectives

  • Create sustainable, site-sensitive facilities to bolster safety and accessibility.
  • Enhance overall visitor experience and the long-term sustainability of Blue Lagoon.

Proposed Improvements

Currently, detailed plans are not viewable online, although an artist’s impression illustrates some proposed changes. The initiative follows the first summer of visitor limits at Blue Lagoon, which faced enforcement challenges.

Key Developments

  • Relocating kiosks to a new structure on ODZ land, addressing unauthorized operations.
  • Creating a 200-meter scenic walkway for enhanced accessibility and views.
  • Restoring and protecting up to 35,000 sqm of garigue landscapes with traditional rubble walls.
  • Moving vessel operations from central Blue Lagoon to safer docking areas.
  • Enlarging the swimming zone by 5,600 sqm, adding new areas introduced this summer.

Facility Enhancements

  • Repurposing existing buildings and degraded areas into visitor information points.
  • Introducing seating, relaxation areas, and local food and beverage services.
  • Implementing a waste management site and sustainable features, including green roofs.
  • Removing 880 sqm of unsafe concrete surfaces and structures.
  • Reorganizing food and beverage offerings with locally-sourced produce and eco-friendly packaging.

No decision has been made regarding revising visitor caps, despite the potential increase in capacity. This development aims to balance tourism growth while maintaining ecological integrity.
