Minister for Health Announces Accelerated Clinical Pathway in New Endometriosis Framework for Sufferers

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has introduced a new framework aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis in Ireland. This chronic condition affects many women as tissue similar to that within the uterus grows outside of it, leading to severe pain and inflammation.

Overview of the New Endometriosis Framework

The framework emphasizes a “presumed diagnosis” approach. This means that general practitioners (GPs) and medical professionals must treat patients reporting endometriosis symptoms as if they have the condition. This change is grounded in the belief that women are best suited to describe their experiences and pain levels.

Key Statements from Jennifer Carroll MacNeill

Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, highlighted that many women, young and old, have often felt unheard and untreated. “Women have had multiple surgeries in Ireland that haven’t worked, leading them to seek treatment abroad, in countries like Romania, Poland, and the UK,” she stated.

Comprehensive Care Approach

The new endometriosis framework will cover treatment from primary care to complex tertiary care. Moderate cases will be assigned to five designated specialist centers:

  • Rotunda Hospital
  • Coombe Hospital
  • University Hospital Limerick
  • University Hospital Galway (in development)
  • National Maternity Hospital (in development)

MacNeill described the disease as primarily a challenge in pain management, with symptoms potentially affecting various parts of the body, including severe cases extending to the brain and eyes.

Expedited Care for Severe Cases

Patients experiencing higher levels of pain will have their cases prioritized. MacNeill indicated ongoing efforts to ensure that specialists in Ireland possess the necessary skills to offer effective support under this new framework.

Future Goals for Endometriosis Care

The focus will also be on enhancing international collaboration and training for surgeons and radiologists. MacNeill believes Ireland can achieve a standard of endometriosis care that ranks among the best in Europe.

This new framework represents a significant step forward in addressing a condition that affects countless women, ensuring their concerns are validated and treated effectively.
