Dorothy Waide Early Learning Center in Griffith Celebrates Milestone 40th Anniversary

The Dorothy Waide Early Learning Center in Griffith recently marked a significant milestone, celebrating its 40th anniversary. The event gathered past and present staff, founders, families, and children, reflecting on the influential role the center has played since its opening in 1985.
Celebrating 40 Years of Early Childhood Education
On October 18, the community came together to honor the legacy of the center. Francie Bastianon, early childhood education leader, shared insights into the center’s origins. “Dorothy Waide, a dedicated Griffith councillor, aimed to enhance social and family services in the 1980s,” she explained.
The Vision of Dorothy Waide
Dorothy Waide was not only a politician but also a Kindergarten teacher with a passion for early childhood education. She understood the necessity of secure childcare options for working parents. Ms. Waide advocated for better childcare, believing it could greatly benefit children if managed effectively.
In a time when private land was hard to come by, Ms. Waide successfully lobbied the State Government for Crown land. This resulted in securing a site on Middleton Avenue, adjacent to a government housing estate being developed during the 1980s.
Milestones and Growth
Originally known as Griffith Child Care Centre, it became the first community-based, not-for-profit childcare provider in the region. Over the years, the center has significantly evolved. “From serving about 20 children, we now cater to around 70,” Ms. Bastianon noted.
- Facilities: Includes nursery, toddler, and pre-school rooms.
- Staffing: Over 20 staff members maintain a high staff-to-student ratio, exceeding legislative requirements.
Remembering Key Contributors
Ms. Bastianon acknowledged the contributions of Neville Dwyer, one of the center’s first directors. His leadership and vision helped shape the priorities of the care provided today. “He emphasized making children the priority,” she stated.
Looking Ahead
The Dorothy Waide Early Learning Center remains as sought-after as ever. Currently, there is a two-year waiting list for enrollment. Ms. Bastianon recommends that parents contact the center as soon as they learn they are expecting to secure a place for their child.
This vibrant center continues to play a crucial role in the Griffith community, celebrating its past while looking forward to a promising future in early childhood education.
