Fahmee Bakery Triumphantly Reopens in Scarborough Following 2022 Fire Tragedy

Fahmee Bakery, a cherished establishment in Scarborough, is making a triumphant return to the local community. After more than three years of absence due to a devastating fire, the bakery will reopen at a new location on Saturday. The grand opening celebration is scheduled for 12 PM to 9 PM at Malvern Town Centre, situated on Tapscott Road near Neilson Road.

History of Fahmee Bakery

The bakery has a rich history, tracing its roots back to the 1980s. Faiz Abdella, the current owner, took over Fahmee Bakery in 2017 after his father, who runs Bakery On The Go, sold Jamaican patties there. Since then, Abdella has focused on modernizing the business, implementing standardized recipes and technological enhancements, despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fire Incident

In the early hours of May 5, 2022, a fire broke out at the bakery’s former location near Brimley Road and Finch Avenue East. Emergency crews responded promptly, but the damage was significant, forcing Abdella and his staff to abandon their original location. Following the incident, they relocated to a smaller store on Lansdowne Avenue to continue operations.

Lessons Learned

The fire incident imparted crucial lessons for Abdella. He emphasized the importance of having adequate insurance, admitting that they were underinsured at the time of the fire. This experience highlighted the need for business owners to focus on growth while delegating tasks to improve efficiency.

New Location at Malvern Town Centre

Fahmee Bakery will now operate from a previously vacant McDonald’s space in Malvern Town Centre. Abdella signed the lease a year ago and has since undertaken significant renovations to create a larger production kitchen, accommodating the high demand for Jamaican patties and coco bread.

Cultural Significance

Abdella is committed to promoting cultural diversity through Fahmee Bakery. He envisions the bakery as a melting pot of various cultures, reflecting the spirit of the Malvern community. He aims to amplify diverse cultural elements in the offerings and operations of the bakery.

As Fahmee Bakery prepares for its grand reopening, the excitement is palpable. Community members are eager to enjoy the return of their favorite Jamaican pastries, fostering a sense of resilience and togetherness in Scarborough.
