Millions to Receive Essential £150 Energy Bill Assistance Letters Starting Tomorrow

Starting tomorrow, millions of households in England and Wales will receive essential letters detailing the £150 energy bill discount for this winter. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced that eligibility letters for the Warm Home Discount scheme will be distributed, marking a significant financial relief for many families.

Expansion of the Warm Home Discount Scheme

This year, the Warm Home Discount has undergone important changes. The removal of the “hard-to-heat” rule means that low-income families on specific benefits now qualify regardless of their housing conditions.

As a result, an additional 2.7 million households, including 900,000 families with children, are eligible for the rebate. This development brings the total to 6 million qualifying households.

Eligibility Criteria for the £150 Discount

To be eligible for this discount, individuals must have been claiming one of seven means-tested benefits as of August 24, 2025. If you did not claim these benefits on that date, eligibility for the payment will not be granted. Nonetheless, there’s a provision for benefits that can be backdated.

Backdating Benefits

  • Pension credit claims can be backdated by three months.
  • Universal Credit claims may be backdated by one month.

Approximately 700,000 pensioners who are eligible for pension credit are currently not claiming it.

Understanding Pension Credit

Pension credit assists in boosting weekly income: £227.10 for single individuals and £346.60 for couples. Those with a disability or caregiving responsibilities may qualify for additional funds. Benefits can include:

  • Attendance allowance
  • Disability living allowance (DLA)
  • Personal independence payment (PIP)

Furthermore, individuals approaching pension age may qualify for the savings credit component if they meet specific criteria.

Additional Benefits

Claiming pension credit can unlock further benefits, such as a free TV license for those over 75 and eligibility for cold weather payments. Applications for pension credit can be made through the government website or by calling the dedicated helpline at 0800 99 1234.

What to Expect from the Letters

Households in England and Wales are set to automatically receive the Warm Home Discount without needing to apply. Letters will be sent out from October 2025 to early January 2026 and will indicate:

  • If you’re eligible for the discount without any action needed.
  • If you may be eligible but must provide further information.

Those who do not receive a letter by early January 2026 but believe they qualify should contact the helpline at 0800 030 9322.

Implementation of Discounts

For eligible households, the discount will be applied to their electricity bill by March 31, 2026. The Warm Home Discount applies regardless of the energy provider.

In Scotland, households may need to apply directly for the Warm Home Discount. There is a “core group” for automatic payments and a “broader group” that must apply through their energy suppliers.

Available Assistance for Energy Bills

Various support options are available for those struggling with energy costs. Households can reach out to their suppliers to explore repayment plans. Many energy firms also offer grants, with certain companies providing funding up to £2,000 for eligible customers.

Priority Services Register (PSR)

Vulnerable households are encouraged to sign up for the Priority Services Register. This service offers additional support, including advance notifications of power outages and free gas safety checks. Contact your energy provider to find out more about your eligibility.
