Military Denies Coup Allegations and Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria has officially dismissed allegations regarding a purported military coup attempt. These claims originated from an online report suggesting a link between the cancellation of the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations and a foiled coup plot. The report alleged that 16 military officers, spanning ranks from Captain to Brigadier General, were under investigation by the Defence Intelligence Agency.

Clarification from the Armed Forces

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, characterized the report as misleading and harmful. He emphasized that such claims were false, malicious, and designed to create unrest among the public.

  • The decision to cancel the 65th Independence Anniversary parade was made to prioritize President Bola Tinubu’s attendance at a crucial international meeting.
  • This cancellation also aims to ensure that the Armed Forces continue their mission against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

Routine Investigations and Military Commitment

The DHQ reassured Nigerians that the ongoing investigation into the 16 officers is part of a standard internal process. This process aims at maintaining discipline and professionalism within the military. An investigative panel has been established, and its findings will be shared publicly after completion.

The DHQ called upon citizens to continue their support for security agencies. They noted that the Federal Government, the legislature, and the judiciary are collaboratively focused on the nation’s safety and democratic principles. The Armed Forces reiterated their loyalty to the Constitution and the government, asserting, “Democracy is forever.”

Furthermore, the DHQ urged the public to dismiss the false narratives propagated by those seeking to undermine stability. The commitment of the Armed Forces under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains unwavering.
