Irish Film Travels from Mayo to California’s Newport Festival Showcasing Major US Debut

Sheila Moylette, a filmmaker from Mayo, is making waves with her short film, ‘Our Father.’ The film will have its major US debut at the 26th annual Newport Beach Film Festival in California. Scheduled for screening on October 18 at 1 PM, ‘Our Father’ is part of the Irish A-Short-ment programme, showcasing six Irish short films at the festival.

About ‘Our Father’

‘Our Father’ was filmed at Ardagh Lodge in Newport, Co. Mayo. The film, set in the 1960s, tells a gripping story about a young priest called to help a new mother, married to a prominent politician. While her husband is away celebrating, she reveals a secret to the priest that will change everything.

Filmmaking Journey

Moylette, who has a background in acting, developed the concept over several years. She drew inspiration from the tales of fairies shared by her grandparents, who blended these beliefs with their everyday lives. “It has been rewarding to bring this vision to life,” she shared.

Production Team

  • Produced by Western Front Studios.
  • Commissioned under Screen Ireland’s ‘Actor as Creator’ initiative.
  • Filmed with the help of local talents, including producer Dorothy Whittaker and cinematographer Brian Durcan.

Moylette expressed her gratitude for the community’s support. Local contributors assisted with catering and other production needs. Her mother baked scones for the crew, and a cherished blanket from her grandmother appeared in the film, adding personal touches to the project.

Festival Experience

‘Our Father’ recently premiered at the Louth International Film Festival, receiving an Honourable Mention for Best Actress for Moylette’s performance. She expressed her joy at showcasing her work alongside friends and former classmates, including actors Fionn Ó Loingsigh and Geraldine McAlinden.

Looking Ahead

As Moylette prepares for her debut at the Newport Beach Film Festival, she is already contemplating her next steps. She hopes to expand ‘Our Father’ into either a feature film or a television series. “I’m excited for what lies ahead,” she remarked.

Support from organizations like Screen Ireland, Bow Street Film Academy, and Culture Ireland has been vital for this local project. Moylette’s journey highlights the emerging talent within the Irish film industry, and her story represents an inspiring chapter in filmmaking.
