Guerrero Ranks Among Top Five Coffee Producers in the Country Discover the Three Leading Regions

Guerrero has emerged as the fifth largest coffee-producing state in Mexico. This achievement is marked by an annual output exceeding 589 tons. However, local coffee farmers face several challenges that hinder their commercial growth.
Leading Coffee Regions in Guerrero
The coffee production in Guerrero is concentrated in three main regions:
- Upper part of the Costa Grande
- Costa Chica
- La Montaña
In these areas, numerous small-scale farmers cultivate coffee, although market access remains a significant obstacle. Municipalities such as Atoyac de Álvarez, San Luis Acatlán, Malinaltepec, Coyuca de Benítez, Iliatenco, and Tecpan de Galeana are beginning to implement strategies aimed at strengthening the production chain.
Challenges Facing Guerrero’s Coffee Farmers
The primary challenge for Guerrero’s coffee farmers is inadequate connectivity in coffee-growing areas. This lack of infrastructure complicates marketing logistics. Additional issues include:
- Digital divide affecting technology use
- Ageing coffee plants, some over a century old
- Limited participation of younger generations migrating to other sectors
In response, at least 20 producers have begun formalizing their operations and registering brands. This initiative aims to sell coffee under their own identity and adhere to quality standards. Their goal is to diminish reliance on intermediaries, who currently control much of the coffee market.
Quality over Quantity
While Guerrero cannot match states like Chiapas in volume, where farms can exceed 50 hectares, Guerrero’s coffee is gaining recognition for its quality. This opens opportunities in the specialty coffee market, a sector that appreciates unique origins, artisanal processing, and distinct flavor profiles.
For Guerrero’s coffee producers, the priority is not only to boost production but also to establish a solid value chain. This improvement would facilitate better sales conditions, enhance brand recognition, and secure positions in both national and international markets.
