Xcel Issues Fire Risk Alert as Powerful Winds Sweep Through Colorado

As Colorado braces for extreme weather conditions, Xcel Energy has issued a fire weather alert due to strong winds. A cold front is moving into the Front Range, which will lower temperatures to approximately 60 degrees.

Xcel Energy Monitoring Fire Risk

On Monday, Xcel Energy assessed the situation to determine if public safety power shutoffs would be necessary for customers in Adams, Boulder, Jefferson, and eastern Denver counties. Fortunately, the company later confirmed that such shutoffs are not anticipated, citing updated forecasting models that project reduced wind speeds.

High Winds and Fire Dangers Ahead

Denver7 has declared a Weather Action Day, highlighting the high winds and fire risks throughout the Denver metro area. Wind advisories are expected to take effect late Sunday night and continue into Monday morning.

  • Foothill Winds: Gusts may reach up to 75 mph between 9 a.m. and noon.
  • Mountain Peaks: Areas above 10,500 feet could see gusts up to 80 mph.
  • Eastern Plains: Expect widespread gusts of 45 to 55 mph, with isolated gusts hitting 60 mph.

Preparedness Recommendations

In light of these conditions, Xcel Energy urges residents to prepare an emergency kit equipped with essential items:

  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Backup phone chargers
  • A phone that does not require electricity
  • Non-electric alarm clock

Weather Outlook

In addition to high winds, light mountain snowfall is predicted north of I-70, while the plains will remain predominantly dry with highs around 60 degrees. Looking ahead, Tuesday and Wednesday promise more stable fall weather, though another temperature drop is anticipated with potential rain on Thursday.
