Xcel Alerts Metro Denver to Potential Power Outages Amid Extreme Weather Conditions

Xcel Energy has alerted customers in the Metro Denver region about the possibility of power outages due to extreme weather conditions. This warning comes amid forecasts predicting strong winds and low humidity, contributing to critical fire weather.

Power Outage Alerts in Metro Denver

As of Sunday evening, Xcel officials confirmed that no proactive power shutoffs would take place in several counties, including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Jefferson, Larimer, and Denver. This decision followed updated forecasts indicating a reduction in wind speeds.

Weather Conditions and Safety Measures

While proactive safety shutoffs are not planned, Xcel warns that residents may still experience unplanned outages due to intense winds starting Monday morning. Strong gusts, expected to reach up to 50 mph, could impact power lines across various areas.

  • Red Flag Warning: In effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.
  • Counties Affected: Jefferson, Douglas, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Park, Boulder, Broomfield, Adams, Denver, Arapahoe, Elbert, Lincoln, and Washington.
  • Humidity Levels: Relative humidity may drop as low as 15%.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings about conditions that favor rapid fire spread. As part of their safety protocol, Xcel has activated Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) across northern Colorado. This means power lines are more sensitive and may shut down quickly if issues are detected, such as branches touching the lines.

Preparation Recommendations for Residents

  • Assemble an outage kit.
  • Update communication preferences for receiving outage updates.

Although these measures enhance public safety, they can also prolong outages since crews need to verify the safety of power lines before restoring electricity. Xcel crews will be on standby to patrol service areas and expedite restoration efforts as conditions evolve. This situation is being monitored closely, and updates will be provided as necessary.
