Canada Launches Customized Processing Times for PR and Citizenship Applications

Canadian permanent residence (PR) and citizenship applicants can now track their applications with heightened precision thanks to a recent update by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The new system offers personalized estimates of processing times based on the application date and position in the queue.
Introduction of Customized Processing Times
Previously, applicants could only access average processing times for various application types without consideration of the submission date. The updated tool enhances transparency for individuals seeking PR or citizenship in Canada.
How the New Tool Works
The tool prompts applicants to answer two important questions: whether they have already applied and the date of their application. For those who have submitted applications, the tool provides:
- Estimated time remaining until a decision is reached
- Number of applicants ahead in the queue
- Total number of individuals waiting for a decision
New applicants will see the current processing time along with the total number of pending applications.
Programs Affected by the Update
The update applies to various economic immigration programs, including:
- Express Entry
- Canadian Experience Class
- Federal Skilled Worker
- Provincial Nominee
- Self-Employed Persons
- Quebec Business Class
- Start-up Visa programs
Additionally, it covers family sponsorship for spouses and common-law partners, both within and outside Canada, including the Parents and Grandparents Program. Citizenship grants and citizenship certificates are also included in this new tracking feature.
Exclusions from the Update
It is important to note that this update does not impact temporary residence applications, sponsorship of dependent children, adoption cases, or specific situations such as humanitarian or refugee applications.
Aiming for Greater Transparency
The IRCC’s updated processing tool aims to provide applicants with a clearer understanding of their status in the application process. By offering customized processing times, the IRCC hopes to improve transparency in Canadian immigration procedures, making the experience more straightforward for applicants.
