After completing his education at St. Xavier’s and Rajasthan College, he joined the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1964, graduating in 1966.

In the initial years of his career, Asrani faced numerous challenges, taking on minor roles and even serving as a teacher at FTII. His talent was eventually recognized by renowned filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar, leading to his breakthrough with the film Guddi in 1971.
