Jeffrey Donaldson Trial Likely Delayed Until Next Year According to Judge
The upcoming trial of Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has been postponed. Originally set to begin on November 3, 2023, the trial will now likely occur next year due to the need for additional medical assessments for his co-accused wife, Eleanor Donaldson.
Trial Delayed for Medical Reasons
During a recent session at Newry Crown Court, it was revealed that further evaluations are necessary for Eleanor Donaldson’s health. A defence attorney stated that her medical situation remains “incomplete.” Judge Paul Ramsey indicated that this delay means the trial may not start until 2024.
Background of the Case
Jeffrey Donaldson, aged 62, from Dromore, County Down, faces 18 allegations, including one count of rape and numerous counts of indecent assault and gross indecency involving minors. His wife, Eleanor Donaldson, aged 59, has been charged with five counts connected to her husband’s accusations. Both have pleaded not guilty.
The charges against Mr. Donaldson span a period from 1987 to 2008. Their trial was initially scheduled for March 2023 but was delayed due to Eleanor’s mental health deterioration.
Update on Medical Assessments
At the latest court review, prosecution barrister Fiona O’Kane reported that Eleanor Donaldson had undergone two assessments the previous week. The findings will be incorporated into a report prepared by another physician. The completion of this final report is anticipated by the end of October or early November.
Judge Ramsey emphasized the importance of these assessments and acknowledged that their findings could significantly impact the trial’s proceedings. He also expressed the collective eagerness to proceed with the trial while noting the necessity to first receive the expert assessments.
Impact of Recent Developments
The legal team for Eleanor Donaldson highlighted the unpredictability of her medical evaluations, suggesting that unforeseen issues could arise. Ian Turkington, a defence barrister, stated that the focus remains on ensuring her fitness for trial.
Jeffrey Donaldson’s political career faced significant repercussions following his arrest in March 2023, leading to his resignation as DUP leader and suspension from the party. In the wake of his arrest, Gavin Robinson was appointed his successor.
