Chopin’s Legacy
Fryderyk Chopin was a renowned composer born in Poland in 1810. He spent much of his career in France before passing away in 1849. Chopin’s heart was buried in Poland, symbolizing his deep connection to his homeland.
This connection drives fans like Emila Chmielewska to advocate passionately for Chopin’s Polish identity, despite common misconceptions of his nationality due to his French roots.
Canadian Talent Shines
Canada has seen notable success in the competition, with Bruce Liu winning in 2021 and Eric Guo achieving first place in the 2023 International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments. Janet Lopinski, president of the Canadian Chopin Society, noted that Canadian contenders have excelled in recent years, highlighting the impressive skills of this year’s five participants.
Among them, Kevin Chen, who competes again on Monday, has wowed judges with his daring selections, including a complete performance of the technically challenging Opus 10 Études.

The final performances promise to showcase the pianists’ abilities at a high level, with all finalists required to perform the Polonaise-Fantasy, Op. 61, along with one of Chopin’s piano concertos. The competition’s judging has been particularly close, necessitating an expansion to 11 finalists this year.
As Chopin’s music continues to resonate with audiences, Wawrzyniec Suleja, a passionate fan, emphasized the composer’s emotional ties to Polish identity. “His music is Polish in the soul,” he remarked, underscoring Chopin’s enduring legacy in his homeland.
