Michael J Fox Reveals On-Set Tensions with Back to the Future Co-Star

Michael J. Fox has recently shed light on the behind-the-scenes tensions with his co-star Crispin Glover during the iconic film, Back to the Future. The actor, known for his role as Marty McFly, expressed that Glover’s unconventional behavior created friction on set.
On-Set Friction with Crispin Glover
In his memoir, Future Boy, Fox, now 65, discussed how he struggled to collaborate with Glover. He noted that, despite their prior acquaintance, Glover’s unpredictable acting style made the experience challenging. “He never did the same thing the same way twice,” Fox remarked.
- Glover had distinctive ideas about his character, George McFly, which often conflicted with the film crew’s vision.
- During one scene, Glover repeatedly deviated from his designated position, causing disruptions.
- To manage this, the crew devised a makeshift barrier using sandbags and C-stands to keep Glover on course.
Fox acknowledged Glover’s undeniable talent and insisted he enjoyed their collaboration, despite the occasional tension. He admired Glover’s commitment to embodying George as he saw fit, explaining, “His methods sometimes created friction, but I respected how he remained true to the character.”
Changes in Casting
At just 21 years old during the film’s production, Glover was subsequently replaced by Jeffrey Weissman for the sequels, which debuted in 1989 and 1990.
Relationships on Set
Fox’s relationship with the film’s female lead, Lea Thompson, also began with complications. Thompson admitted that her friendship with former cast member Eric Stoltz, who was replaced by Fox, contributed to initial tensions. However, she and Fox eventually developed a strong rapport during filming.
Fox’s Ongoing Health Journey
In addition to discussing his experiences on set, Fox recently opened up about his battle with Parkinson’s disease, which he has managed since the age of 29. He expressed a desire for a peaceful passing, saying, “I’d like to just not wake up one day. That’d be really cool.”
In interviews, Fox shared the daily challenges he faces due to his condition, stating, “I wake up and get the message of what the day is gonna be like, and I try to adjust to it.” This candid reflection highlights his resilience in navigating life’s hurdles.
Glover has yet to respond to Fox’s remarks regarding their time filming Back to the Future, leaving fans eager for more insights into the iconic film’s legacy and its cast.
