Jumbo Rockets Launch 2025-26 Season with Powerful Lineup Featuring Steven Adams as Starter

The Houston Rockets are set to kick off the 2025-26 NBA season with an impressive lineup that features both Steven Adams and Alperen Sengun as starting centers. This formation marks a significant strategy shift for the team, under the guidance of head coach Ime Udoka.

Jumbo Rockets Start Strong with Unique Lineup

Coach Udoka announced the use of a “double big” lineup at a team practice on Monday. With a blend of size and skill, the starting five will include:

  • Alperen Sengun (6’10”)
  • Steven Adams (6’11”)
  • Jabari Smith Jr. (6’10”)
  • Kevin Durant (6’10”)
  • Amen Thompson (6’7″) as point guard

Both Sengun and Adams had stellar performances during preseason, showcasing net ratings of +21.7 and +21.5, respectively.

Upcoming Season Opener

Houston will begin its regular season on Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder’s lineup will also feature two big men, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein. This matchup may put the effectiveness of Houston’s “jumbo” strategy to the test.

Flexibility and Depth

Throughout preseason, Udoka explored various lineups, emphasizing the need for adaptability during the early games of the season. With Dorian Finney-Smith sidelined from postseason surgery, some positions are still subject to change.

Four spots in the starting lineup are confirmed with Durant, Thompson, Sengun, and Smith. The remaining position will likely go to either Adams, second-year guard Reed Sheppard, or fourth-year guard Tari Eason.

Initially, veteran guard Fred VanVleet was expected to fill this role. However, after a serious knee injury in September, plans shifted to give Adams the start instead. This decision may lead to the Rockets employing zone defenses to mitigate any agility concerns within the lineup.

Bench Strength

Despite the significant starting lineup, Sheppard and Eason remain integral to the team’s bench depth. Their contributions will be vital as Houston seeks to establish its identity in the 2025-26 season.

The Rockets’ commitment to a robust lineup could redefine their playing style, adapting to their opponents while leveraging their size advantage in the upcoming season.
