Local Water District Hosts Engaging Community Education Event

On October 16, the Alameda County Water District (ACWD) hosted an educational event titled “An Evening in the Garden with Pints & Plants.” This engaging community education event aimed to promote water conservation as part of the national Value of Water campaign. ACWD’s public affairs supervisor, Sharene Gonzales, emphasized the importance of conserving water, stating, “Every drop counts.”
Event Details
The event took place at Birdhaus Beer Garden, located at 3821 Smith St. in Union City, from 4 PM to 7 PM. In the first hour alone, around 35 participants attended. Gonzales noted that the event was designed as a family-friendly activity, welcoming individuals of all ages.
Food and Activities
- Attendees enjoyed free food provided by Da Good Vibes, featuring items such as Spam musubi, Filipino lumpia, and adobo chicken wings.
- Participants had the option to purchase beer during the event.
- A “plant personality” quiz was available, allowing guests to explore their water use behaviors.
- Based on quiz results, visitors received succulent plants to pot, with soil and pebbles provided for stability.
Quizzes had playful titles like “Casual Conservation Conspirator” and “High Maintenance Hydrator,” adding a fun twist to the learning experience. Additionally, representatives from the University of California Master Gardener Program were present to offer insights on landscaping, water use, and gardening.
Annual Tradition
This annual community event focused on water conservation marks a new partnership between ACWD and Birdhaus Beer Garden. Previously, ACWD conducted tours of their water treatment plant, available by request from Tuesday to Thursday. Through these engaging events and programs, the ACWD continues to promote awareness and education surrounding water conservation throughout the community.
