John Kirby Appointed as New Director at University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics

John Kirby has been appointed as the new director of the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics (IOP). He will officially begin his role on November 15, 2023. This prestigious appointment follows Kirby’s extensive background in public service and military leadership.
Background of John Kirby
Kirby is a retired rear admiral in the United States Navy. He has held several key positions within the federal government. Most recently, he served as the White House National Security Communications Advisor from 2022 to 2025. Additionally, he worked as the Pentagon Press Secretary under President Biden and had a similar role during the Obama administration.

- 1985: Graduated from the University of South Florida with a BA in History.
- Master’s in International Relations: Troy University.
- Master’s in National Security and Strategic Studies: Naval War College.
University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics
The Institute of Politics was established in 2013 by David Axelrod. It is a nonpartisan center focused on fostering civic engagement, civil discourse, and free expression. The IOP encourages students to engage with their democracy through four main programs:
- Career Development Program: Provides nearly 300 paid internships globally each year.
- Civic Engagement Program: Offers leadership development and various civic participation avenues.
