Thibaut Courtois Slams La Liga for ‘Manipulation’ Over Unbroadcast Miami Game Protests

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has publicly criticized La Liga for alleged “manipulation” concerning recent protests. These protests took place over the weekend, opposing the planned match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami. Teams opted to delay the start of their games by 15 seconds as a demonstration. However, reports indicate that La Liga requested TV networks not to broadcast these protests.

La Liga’s Response to Protests

The Athletic revealed that La Liga president Javier Tebas sent a letter to David Aganzo, president of the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE). In this letter, he warned that a planned strike could have “unwanted consequences” for players. Courtois expressed disbelief over La Liga’s actions, stating that this concealment goes against the spirit of the game.

Concerns Over Competitive Fairness

Regarding the Miami match scheduled for December, Courtois raised concerns about fairness in competition. UEFA approved the match on October 6, making it the first European top-flight game to be held in the United States. Courtois argued that removing the home advantage is detrimental to competition integrity.

  • Home matches provide a unique advantage, enhancing team performance.
  • In leagues like the NBA or NFL, extensive fixtures make neutral game locations less impactful.
  • Courtois emphasized that La Liga differs as clubs do not fully control the league.

Team Support and Ongoing Discussions

Teammate Dani Carvajal voiced similar concerns on social media, stating that holding the match in the U.S. would leave a “stain on the competition.” Real Madrid has expressed its opposition to this fixture, sending two letters to the Spanish Sports Council (CSD) recently. Furthermore, AFE representatives and La Liga are in discussions to address the ongoing concerns.
