According to the report, there are significant flaws in the electric motors of plug-in hybrids. They lack the power necessary to facilitate true zero-emission driving, resulting in the petrol engine activating more frequently than owners might realize. This contributes to unnecessary fuel consumption, undermining the vehicles’ eco-friendly intentions.

Ms. Herbert noted that many buyers consider hybrids as an intermediate step toward fully electric vehicles. However, the new findings prompt a reevaluation of their inclusion in future electric vehicle targets set by the government. She asserts that it would be difficult for officials to defend the claim of 195,000 electric vehicles on the roads if a significant number are plug-in hybrids.
