WeeklyMTG Unveils 2027 Limited Championship and Commander Bracket Updates

In a recent episode of WeeklyMTG, Blake Rasmussen and William “Huey” Jensen unveiled exciting details about the 2027 Limited Championship for Magic: The Gathering. This specialized tournament will focus exclusively on Limited play, with various global events leading up to it.

2027 Limited Championship Details

The 2027 Limited Championship is set to reward Magic players for their skills in Limited formats. Although the exact date and location are yet to be confirmed, players can look forward to qualifying opportunities throughout 2026.

Qualification Opportunities

Players can qualify through several pathways:

  • Limited Championship Qualifiers (LTQs) at Regional Championships.
  • Participation in the Spotlight Series and MagicCons.
  • Achievement of a Top 16 ranking among drafters during the 2026 Premier Play season.
  • Automatic qualification for the winner of Magic World Championship 32.
  • Members of the Magic Hall of Fame can redeem their Pro Tour invite for this event.

Prize Structure

The prize pool for the Championship is substantial. The winner will receive $500,000, and the Top 8 players will earn invitations to the World Championship. This prize structure mirrors that of the Pro Tour, highlighting the event’s competitive nature.

Commander Bracket Updates

In addition to the Limited Championship, Gavin Verhey shared updates on the Commander Bracket system. The Commander Format Panel (CFP) has expressed satisfaction with the current Bracket structure but plans to implement key changes this month.

Key Changes to the Bracket System

  • Each Bracket will now feature an average turns estimate, providing players insight into potential game duration.
  • Bracket 2, known as “Core,” will no longer be exclusively tied to preconstructed Commander decks. This allows for greater flexibility as new decks are developed.
  • The removal of the “Tutor restriction” within the Bracket system, in response to community feedback indicating that these limitations were unnecessary.

Updates on Game Changers

Some cards previously classified as Game Changers will be removed from this list. Examples include:

High Mana Value Cards Strong Command Zone Legends Uncategorized Cards
Expropriate Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy Deflecting Swat
Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur Urza, Lord High Artificer Food Chain
Sway of the Stars Winota, Joiner of Forces
Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow

These changes are intended to maintain balance and enhance gameplay quality. Verhey also mentioned potential discussions about adding another Bracket in the future, with the next evaluation scheduled for late February next year.
