Kleber Sidelined for a Minimum of 2 Weeks Due to Oblique Strain Injury

Maxi Kleber of the Los Angeles Lakers will be sidelined for at least two weeks due to an oblique strain. The team confirmed this injury on Tuesday, affecting their frontcourt depth as they begin the season.
Kleber’s Injury History
Kleber’s struggles with injuries have been notable since joining the Lakers. Prior to this season, he was acquired from the Dallas Mavericks as part of a trade involving Luka Doncic in February. At that time, he was recovering from surgery for a fractured right foot, which kept him out of action for the remainder of the regular season. He only participated for five minutes in Game 5 of the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Recently, he injured his quadriceps during training camp. This injury limited his participation in the preseason to just one game, where he recorded three points and two rebounds.
Coach’s Remarks
Lakers head coach JJ Redick expressed sympathy for Kleber’s situation. Redick noted their conversation about Kleber’s relentless efforts to maintain his fitness and readiness for play.
Redick’s Supportive Words
Redick stated, “He’s like, ‘I do everything right. I take care of myself, I get my sleep, I put the right things in my body. I work out, I train.'” However, Kleber has faced a series of injuries over the past two seasons. Redick hopes that Kleber’s oblique strain is a short-term setback and that he will soon return to assist the team.

Season Opening Roster Changes
With Kleber out, the Lakers will start Deandre Ayton at center for their season opener against the Golden State Warriors. Jaxson Hayes, who sustained a wrist bruise in the preseason, is set to be the primary backup.
Additionally, LeBron James will miss the opening night for the first time in his 23-year career due to sciatica. He is expected to be reevaluated in 1-2 weeks, joining rookie Adou Thiero, who is recovering from knee surgery.
