The Colorado Avalanche have made a remarkable return to their roots by unveiling specialty jerseys inspired by the Quebec Nordiques. This announcement took place on Tuesday morning, showcasing a tribute to the franchise’s rich history.
History of the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado Avalanche
The Quebec Nordiques were founded in 1972 as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA) in Quebec City. The team transitioned to the NHL in 1979, alongside franchises such as the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets. In 1995, the Nordiques were acquired by COMSAT Entertainment Group, the same owners as the Denver Nuggets. Following the purchase, the team moved to Colorado and rebranded as the Avalanche.
Design Inspiration
The newly unveiled jerseys reflect significant elements of Quebec’s culture and heritage. The design features:
- Color Scheme: Blue, red, and white, inspired by the French flag and French-Canadian roots.
- Fleur-de-lis Motif: Prominently displayed, paying homage to French-Canadian pride.
- Central Logo: An igloo shaped like the letter “N,” combined with a hockey stick and puck. This symbolizes the northern heritage of Quebec, as “Nordiques” translates to “Northerners.”
Each detail in the jersey aims to celebrate the team’s origins and its connection to Quebec’s identity.
Upcoming Games in Nordiques Jerseys
The Avalanche will debut their Nordiques specialty jerseys during an intriguing matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. This game, scheduled for Thursday, serves as a unique homage to both teams’ original histories. The Hurricanes will wear their own throwback jerseys inspired by the Hartford Whalers, a franchise that relocated in 1997, shortly after the Nordiques became the Avalanche.
Across the 2025-26 season, the Colorado Avalanche plan to don these special Nordiques jerseys for a total of seven games.
