LNG Croatia Set to Double Its Capacity for Enhanced Energy Supply

LNG Croatia is poised to double its gas supply capacity, significantly enhancing energy security in the region. This expansion is critical not only for Croatia but also for neighboring countries in Central and Southeastern Europe.

LNG Croatia’s Capacity Expansion

As of October 22, 2025, the floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) of LNG Croatia has returned to its Omišalj terminal. It underwent refurbishment and installed a new re-gasification module at the Kuzey Star shipyard in Turkey.

The recent upgrades aim for the safe and reliable commencement of commercial operations, set for October 26, 2025. The new module will boost the terminal’s capacity from 3.1 billion to 6.1 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Significant Investments

  • The expansion project represents an investment of 16.6 million euros.
  • The main component of the tender, valued at 14.61 million euros, was awarded to Kuzey Star shipyard.
  • Zagreb-based S.C.A.N. won the second part of the tender for 1.99 million euros, handling electrical equipment integration.

Technical Specifications

The LNG Croatia ship, originally built in 2005 in South Korea, was acquired in 2018. An additional 250,000 cubic meters per hour have been added to the existing capacity of 450,000 cubic meters. The new gasification module weighs 470 tonnes and was produced by WGS in China.

Strategic Importance of the Expansion

This development aligns with the European Union’s broader initiative to diversify energy sources. It highlights the growing demand for liquefied natural gas across the region.

Before this expansion, LNG Croatia’s terminal capacities were fully leased for the next 12 years, indicating strong interest and future growth potential.

LNG Croatia’s enhanced capacity not only promises improved reliability for local supply but also positions it as a vital energy hub within the European energy landscape.
