Netflix Set to Develop ‘Catan’ Movies and TV Series

Netflix has secured the global rights to develop projects based on the popular board game “Catan.” This initiative includes films, scripted and unscripted television series, as well as live-action and animated content. The production team consists of Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studios, and the Teuber brothers—Guido and Benjamin, who are the sons of the game’s creator Klaus Teuber. Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment will also play a key role in production.

Expansion of the “Catan” Universe

Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, expressed excitement about the opportunity. He stated that “Catan” has provided millions with an introduction to modern board gaming since its inception. As the game grows to reach a wider audience, it underscores board gaming’s place in popular culture.

Historical Significance

  • Release Year: “Catan” was originally launched in 1995 as “The Settlers of Catan.”
  • Sales Figures: The game has sold over 45 million copies globally.
  • Language Translations: “Catan” has been translated into more than 40 languages.

In “Catan,” players settle on a fictional island, gathering resources to grow their settlements and earn victory points. The Teuber brothers shared their enthusiasm regarding the collaboration with Netflix, highlighting how it aligns with their father’s vision of fostering creativity and connection through gaming.

Netflix’s Gaming Adaptations

Netflix has a history of producing content inspired by games, including the acclaimed animated series “Arcane,” based on “League of Legends,” and adaptations of “Castlevania” and “Assassin’s Creed.” Recently, the platform announced a reality competition series based on “Monopoly.”

Creative Opportunities

Jinny Howe, head of scripted series for Netflix in the US and Canada, remarked on the intense strategy of “Catan,” suggesting it offers ample scope for dramatic storytelling. The partnership aims to bring the world of “Catan” to life, appealing to both dedicated fans and newcomers alike.

The deal for the adaptation was negotiated by CAA and Goodman Genow on behalf of Asmodee and Catan GmbH.
