Cavs’ Larry Nance Jr. Returns to Cleveland as a WNBA Advocate Making Sister Casey Proud

Larry Nance Jr. has made headlines with his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers while advocating for a new WNBA team in Cleveland. His connection to basketball runs deep, influenced by his sister Casey Nance’s impressive achievements in the sport.

Larry Nance Jr.’s Advocacy for Women’s Basketball

During a visit to Rocket Arena in November 2024 as a member of the Atlanta Hawks, Nance wore a Cleveland Rockers T-shirt. This was a subtle appeal for Cleveland to gain a new WNBA franchise, which was officially awarded on June 30, 2028. The following day, Nance re-signed with the Cavaliers on a one-year contract valued at $3.6 million.

Nance is a passionate supporter of women’s basketball and expresses joy about the impact of the new team on young girls. His sister, Casey Nance, was a standout player at Revere High School, where she compiled remarkable stats, including:

  • 1,037 points
  • 1,113 rebounds
  • 281 blocked shots

In recognition of the Nance family’s contributions to sports, Revere High School retired jersey No. 22 in honor of Larry, Casey, and their brother Pete.

Casey Nance’s Basketball Legacy

Casey Nance, a graduate of Revere High School in 2008, also excelled at the University of Dayton. Her accolades included:

  • Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie Team selection
  • All-Defensive Team member
  • Three-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Scholar Athlete Award

She played a pivotal role in leading Dayton to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Casey met her wife, Cassie Sant, a fellow basketball player, during her time at the university. Currently, Casey works for KeyBank and Cassie is employed as a graphic designer for the Cavs.

Nance Family Support and Community Impact

Larry Nance Jr.’s return has been celebrated by his family. He acknowledges that his sister set high standards in basketball and life, influencing his personal aspirations. “I’m thrilled for Cleveland to get a WNBA team. It’s bigger than just basketball,” he said.

Cleveland’s WNBA franchise has a rich history, being one of the original eight teams when it was established in 1996. Larry Nance Jr. hopes to contribute not only to the Cavs but also to the broader community by setting an example for young girls and advocating for equality in sports.

Nance’s Goals with the Cavaliers

Now in his 11th NBA season, Nance aims to help the Cavaliers achieve success. During the 2024-25 season, he played 24 games with the Hawks, averaging 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and boasting a shooting percentage of 51.6%.

Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson praised Nance’s character, stating he fits well within the team’s culture. Nance’s leadership and experience are assets as the team gears up for the upcoming season.

As Nance prepares to kick off the 2025-26 season against the New York Knicks on October 22 at 7 p.m., he remains committed to both his NBA career and his advocacy for women in sports.
