King and Queen Arrive in Rome for Audience with the Pope

The King and Queen of the United Kingdom made their recent visit to Rome for a highly anticipated audience with the Pope. This significant trip marked the first state visit since the Reformation where both the monarch and the Pope participated in a joint prayer during an ecumenical service at the Sistine Chapel.
Postponement and Arrival
The royal visit was initially scheduled for April but was delayed due to health concerns surrounding Pope Francis. Instead, the King and Queen received a private audience with him during an earlier state visit to Italy, just weeks prior to his passing.
The couple departed from Farnborough airport aboard a British Government plane on a Wednesday, landing at Rome’s Ciampino airport shortly before 6:30 PM local time.
Formal Welcome
Upon their arrival, the King and Queen were greeted by notable representatives from the Holy See, including:
- Christopher Trott, Ambassador to the Holy See
- Dr. Anabel Inge, Deputy Head of Mission to the Holy See
- Monsignor Javier Domingo Fernández González, Head of the Protocol Office
- Archbishop Francesco Canalini, retired Apostolic Nuncio
Royal Attire and Statements
During the visit, the Queen showcased a feather print silk dress designed by Fiona Clare, complemented by a brown cashmere trench coat from Anna Valentine. She expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It is a great pleasure to be here.”
The King reciprocated the warm sentiments, telling Archbishop Canalini, “It is wonderful to be able to come back to Rome.” This visit underscores the strong historical ties between the English Crown and the Vatican.
