Bob Geldof Expresses Regret Over Not Running for President Believes He Would Have Excelled

Bob Geldof has expressed regret over not running in the recent Presidential Election, believing he would have excelled in the role. The renowned musician and activist made this statement as he prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his band, the Boomtown Rats.

Geldof’s Consideration for Presidential Candidacy

Earlier this year, Geldof reached out to Taoiseach Micheál Martin, contemplating a bid for the Fianna Fáil nomination. However, after Martin informed him that the party would not endorse his candidacy, Geldof opted against seeking support from other political parties or county councils.

During a discussion on Newstalk Breakfast, Geldof reflected on his decision, saying, “Yeah, I think so,” when asked if he regretted not pursuing a nomination. He noted that timing played a crucial role, stating, “If it was last year or next year, I’d have gone for it if I’d been nominated by one of the parties.” He acknowledged that he approached the Taoiseach too late in the process, making a candidacy unfeasible.

Election Dynamics

Geldof pointed out that this year’s election lacked candidates nominated by four County Councils, a departure from previous contested elections. He noted that public ambivalence towards his persona might have hindered his chances to secure a spot on the ballot, but he expressed enthusiasm about the electoral process itself. “I would have liked the scrap,” he mentioned, indicating his desire to engage in open debate and discussion about the election.

Desire for Leadership

Despite the competition, Geldof holds a deep aspiration to serve as Ireland’s Head of State. He remarked, “I think I could have done the job. I think I would have been good at the job.” Expressing admiration for the current candidates, Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys, he acknowledged their capabilities while still yearning for the opportunity himself.

Commemorating 50 Years of the Boomtown Rats

The Boomtown Rats will mark their 50th anniversary with a special event, unveiling a commemorative plaque at TU Dublin. This plaque celebrates the band’s first gig, which took place on Halloween night in 1975. Although there is some debate regarding the exact location, Geldof insists it was on Bolton Street.

Reflecting on the band’s enduring popularity, Geldof stated he is continually amazed by the audience’s loyalty. He shared that they are currently on a sold-out UK tour and expressed gratitude for the lasting impact of their music.

The 50th anniversary event will culminate in a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon, bringing a full circle moment to the band known for their influential legacy.
