Bob Geldof Regrets Not Running for President Believes He Could Have Excelled in the Role
Bob Geldof recently reflected on his decision not to run for president, admitting he regrets not pursuing the opportunity. At 74, Geldof had shown interest in the presidential role earlier this summer, viewing it as “something new, stimulating, and useful.” However, he expressed that his retraction was primarily due to timing.
Timing and Political Landscape
During an interview with Newstalk Breakfast, Geldof revealed he had discussed his ambitions with Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Unfortunately, he learned that Fianna Fáil had already designated its candidate: Jim Gavin, former Dublin football manager, who withdrew from the race in early October.
Geldof stated, “I only called the Taoiseach, and late in the day he’d already made his decision.” He also shared doubts about his capability to secure enough support from county councils for nomination. Despite his reservations, Geldof believed he could have been a strong candidate.
Confidence in Candidacy
“I think I could have done the job,” he asserted, acknowledging that while he might not be everyone’s favorite, he had the skills to excel in the role. Geldof expressed enthusiasm about engaging in the electoral process, saying, “I would have liked the scrap.”
Currently, the presidential race features two candidates: Independent Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys. Geldof recognizes both as “capable and nice people.” Although he has remained closely attuned to the race, he has considered the implications of such an endeavor on his personal life.
Personal Reflections and Legacy
Reflecting on his life, Geldof noted the personal sacrifices involved, particularly missing his children and grandchildren in England. “Is this really what I wanted to do in the last lap of my life?” he questioned.
Geldof’s comments come as the Boomtown Rats prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first gig. This performance took place on Halloween night in Dublin, a memorable moment for Geldof who recalled, “Much to my dismay, people were clapping.” This unexpected reception sparked his desire to rename the band from Nightlife Thugs to the more iconic Boomtown Rats.
A Historic Commemoration
In connection with this milestone, Geldof attended the unveiling of a plaque at the Technological University Dublin, commemorating the band’s inaugural performance and their contribution to music history.
As he looks back on his journey, Bob Geldof remains a significant figure in both music and the public sphere, leaving fans to wonder what his future political pursuits might have held.
