Ex-Alabama Football Star Enters Race for Major State Office in Alabama

AJ McCarron, the former Alabama national championship-winning quarterback, has declared his candidacy for lieutenant governor in Alabama’s 2026 elections. His announcement was made on Thursday, marking a significant shift from his football career to public service. The Mobile native, who also played for the Cincinnati Bengals, expressed his commitment to his home state.

Competition in the Lieutenant Governor Race

McCarron will face a competitive field for the lieutenant governor position. His opponents include:

  • Wes Allen – Alabama Secretary of State
  • Rick Pate – Alabama Agriculture Commissioner
  • Dean Odle – Pastor from Opelika
  • Nicole Wadsworth – Commercial realtor

Additionally, former Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill is also reportedly considering a run for the position.

Personal Motivations and Political Views

In his candidacy announcement, McCarron emphasized the values he learned while playing football. He stated, “My roots run deep in Alabama, and with my football career behind me, I feel led to give back.” He cited his desire to instill Christian values and morals in his children as part of his motivation to run.

McCarron has a history of political involvement, having endorsed President Trump during Trump’s first campaign in 2016. He mentioned being motivated by the events surrounding the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which he described as an attack on Alabama’s conservative values.

Vision for Alabama

McCarron believes it is time for political newcomers to take charge. He criticized “Montgomery insiders and career politicians,” expressing a need for fresh perspectives. In his statement, he also referenced Sen. Tommy Tuberville, emphasizing support for a conservative agenda.

He stated, “When Coach Tuberville is governor, I’ll be the quarterback who helps pass his conservative, outsider agenda.”

Background and Achievements

McCarron’s football career is notable. He was part of three Alabama teams that claimed BCS national championships. As the starting quarterback, he led the Crimson Tide to victory during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2013, he won the Maxwell Award and was a Heisman Trophy runner-up.

After playing his last game for the St. Louis Battlehawks in 2024, McCarron turned to media, discussing football on “The Dynasty: A Podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide,” alongside Trent Richardson and Chris Stewart.

Upcoming Elections

The primary election for the lieutenant governor race is set for May 19, 2026. As McCarron transitions from athlete to candidate, he aims to leverage his experiences to make an impact on Alabama’s future.
