Tom Izzo, the head basketball coach at Michigan State University, is adapting to recent NCAA rule changes affecting exhibition games. These changes, approved in January, eliminate the need for waivers to host Division I exhibition games, allowing programs to schedule two such matches each season.

Michigan State’s Exhibition Schedule

This season, Michigan State is set to host two exhibition games. The first will be against Bowling Green, featuring Tom Izzo’s former player Tum Tum Nairn, now the associate head coach at BG. This game is scheduled for Thursday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. The second exhibition will take place on October 31 in Hartford, Connecticut, against UConn.

Previous Successful Exhibition Events

• In 2017, Izzo collaborated with Mark Fox to hold an exhibition game against Georgia.
• That event raised nearly $350,000 for hurricane relief efforts, attracting over 10,000 fans.
• In 2023, MSU continued this tradition with another charity exhibition against Tennessee.

Despite changing rules, Izzo expresses some concern about the competitiveness of Division I exhibitions. He believes these changes could diminish opportunities for smaller Division II programs to gain exposure playing against larger crowds.

Last year, Izzo led the Spartans on a summer trip to Spain, where they competed in three games against international teams. This trip was crucial for team bonding and preparation, contributing to an impressive 30-7 record and a run to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament.
