Chargers’ Costly Free Agency Gamble Fails to Deliver Results

The Los Angeles Chargers faced significant challenges during the recent NFL offseason, highlighting a costly free agency gamble that failed to deliver results. Their marquee acquisitions were running back Najee Harris and offensive guard Mekhi Becton. However, both players have not met expectations due to injuries and underperformance.

Injury Woes for Key Players

Nike Harris suffered a severe eye injury during a July 4 fireworks accident and subsequently tore his left Achilles tendon in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. This unfortunate series of events means Harris will miss the entire season.

Mekhi Becton, the Chargers’ highest-profile signing, also struggled. After joining the team with a two-year contract worth up to $20 million, he has failed to perform at the level anticipated by the franchise.

Challenges on the Offensive Line

The Chargers’ offensive line has been plagued by issues this season. Rashawn Slater, a two-time Pro Bowler, suffered a significant injury, tearing his patellar tendon during training camp. Additionally, second-year player Joe Alt has missed three games due to a high ankle sprain incurred in Week 4 against the New York Giants.

Becton, a former tackle for the New York Jets, transitioned to guard last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, demonstrating strong performance there. However, his move to the Chargers has not yielded similar results, with his performance metrics reflecting poor results.

PFF Grades Highlight Struggles

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Becton’s performance does not meet expectations. His overall grade of 41.4 ranks him 105th among 113 offensive guards. Furthermore, his run-blocking and pass-blocking grades of 40.9 and 48.9 place him among the bottom tier.

Despite not allowing a sack on quarterback Justin Herbert, Becton has permitted 12 pressures and three quarterback hits. He has also committed four penalties, further compounding his struggles.

Future Considerations

The Chargers face a dilemma regarding Becton’s future. Given the ongoing injuries to their offensive line, they have little choice but to retain him in the lineup. However, the contract includes an out clause allowing the team to release him after this season with only a $2.5 million dead-cap hit.

If Becton continues to disappoint, it may be prudent for the Chargers to exercise this option. The organization’s gamble during free agency has certainly cast doubt on their decision-making.
