LA City Proposes $5,000 Reward to Combat Copper Wire Theft; AT&T Pledges $20,000
Los Angeles city officials are taking proactive measures to address the rising problem of copper wire theft through community engagement. A proposed ordinance will offer a reward of $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of individuals involved in the theft of copper wire and other city properties.
Details of the Proposal
If signed by Mayor Karen Bass, this ordinance will not only target copper wire theft but will also apply to other city assets, including:
- City plaques
- Tombstones
- Statues
- Light standards
AT&T’s Commitment Against Theft
In a supportive move, AT&T has pledged a substantial reward totaling $20,000. This reward is aimed at anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of copper wire thieves. According to Chris Collins, the communications lead manager at AT&T, this initiative is crucial to deter theft and support the community.
Recent Incidents of Theft
The urgency of this proposal is underscored by a recent incident in Mission Hills, where residents reported group activity involving the cutting down of electric poles to steal copper cables. One resident initially mistook the thieves for animals due to their stealthy approach. However, upon closer inspection, they witnessed the group actively removing cables.
Response from Law Enforcement
When the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to the 911 calls, two suspects were apprehended at the scene. The stolen copper wire was valued at approximately $50,000. The suspects are identified as:
- Concepcion Vasquez, 53 years old
- Jose Garcia Avila, 51 years old
Authorities continue to search for two additional suspects involved in the theft.
