Albertans Face Frustration as COVID-19 Vaccinations Overwhelm Health Link

Albertans are expressing their frustrations as they try to secure COVID-19 vaccinations amid overwhelming demand. The province launched its fall immunization campaign to the general public on Monday, while Health Link received an influx of over 10,000 calls specifically regarding COVID-19 shots.

Vaccination Phases in Alberta

The vaccination program in Alberta operates in phases. The first phase began on September 29, providing free shots to high-risk groups, including:

  • Individuals with underlying medical conditions
  • Residents of care homes
  • Health care workers
  • Seniors receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit
  • People experiencing homelessness

Phase two opened on Monday, allowing all Albertans six months and older to receive the COVID vaccine for a fee of $100. The flu vaccine, available at no cost, also became accessible to the public.

High Call Volumes Create Challenges

As the vaccination phase commenced, many seniors faced obstacles when trying to book appointments. Elizabeth Smythe, a senior from Edmonton, voiced her disappointment after being unable to schedule her vaccination through the online portal or by phone.

Smythe said, “How dare you try and make it hard for me to get vaccinated? This is a sensible, cost-effective way to protect our health care system and keep people like me healthy.”

Similarly, Airdrie resident Cyrena Raymond-Fauteux faced difficulties when attempting to book appointments for herself and her four-year-old child. Appointments for children under 12 must be made through Health Link, but Raymond-Fauteux struggled to connect, making multiple attempts without success.

Health Link’s Response

In a statement to Emegypt, Primary Care Alberta acknowledged the unprecedented call volume due to the immunization campaign and avian influenza concerns. By noon on Monday, Health Link received:

  • 10,346 calls concerning COVID-19 vaccination
  • 1,458 calls for flu shots

Spokesperson Nicole Merrifield urged the public to retry calling later or to book online at primarycarealberta.ca/immunize. She noted that staff and extended hours have been implemented to address the demand, with additional staff being allocated as necessary.

Community Response and Future Actions

Despite the challenges, Raymond-Fauteux expressed optimism about the high engagement among Albertans seeking vaccinations, emphasizing the community’s readiness to prioritize public health. She highlighted the need for the government to eliminate barriers, including the cost of the COVID vaccine, to facilitate easier access for all residents.

As the vaccination campaign continues, both health officials and community members hope for improvements in the booking process and greater accessibility for everyone in Alberta.
