Blues Cut Rookie with Year Left on Contract as Two More Players Exit
Carlton Football Club has made significant changes to its roster following the recent trade period. Notably, the club has released Jaxon Binns, despite the 20-year-old having a year left on his contract. The decision comes as part of a broader strategy to streamline the team.
Roster Changes at Carlton FC
Jaxon Binns, a rookie selection from 2022, had limited opportunities, appearing in only eight AFL matches over three seasons. He did win the club’s VFL best and fairest award in 2023, showcasing his talent in the lower league.
Alongside Binns, the club is assessing the futures of Elijah Hollands and Will White. Hollands, selected as the No. 7 pick previously, is also leaving the club with a year remaining on his contract. His recent tenure involved 27 games, but personal challenges limited his performance over the past year.
Reasons for Departures
- Binns struggled for consistent senior games.
- Hollands faced personal issues, complicating his playing time.
- White, at just 21, played 14 games this season but is now uncertain about his future.
The incorporation of new players such as Campbell Chesser, Ben Ainsworth, Will Hayward, and Ollie Florent has intensified competition for list spots, contributing to these decisions.
Future Opportunities
Carlton’s list manager, Nick Austin, indicated that Hollands and White may still have a chance to return. Both players could be invited for pre-season training opportunities after the upcoming draft in November.
Austin remarked, “These are always difficult decisions. However, we believe this approach is best for the club’s strategy moving forward.”
Other Departures
In addition to these three players, Carlton has already delisted Alex Cincotta, Orazio Fantasia, and Harry Lemmey. The club also witnessed the departures of Tom De Koning, Jack Silvagni, Charlie Curnow, and Corey Durdin, while Sam Docherty announced his retirement.
As Carlton navigates this transition, fans remain hopeful for the team’s future performance under its evolving roster.
