M4 Overnight Weekend Closure to Impact Both Directions
Significant road closures will impact traffic on one of Wales’ busiest motorways this weekend. The M4 will close in both directions due to essential construction work. This major road work is focused on the installation of the new A432 Badminton Road Bridge.
M4 Overnight Weekend Closure Details
The M4 motorway will be closed from Junction 18 (Bath) to Junction 19 (M32) starting 7 PM on Friday, October 24, and running until 6 AM on Monday, October 27. National Highways is overseeing this project, marking a critical phase in the ongoing infrastructure improvement efforts.
Construction Information
- The installation involves lifting eight large steel beams into position.
- The bridge measures 46.5 meters long and 20 meters wide.
- The work will significantly enhance safety features, including wider pavements and protective barriers.
- Traffic disruptions are expected due to high volumes—up to 4,000 vehicles can pass this area every hour on weekends.
Sean Walsh, a route manager at National Highways, emphasized the importance of safety during these operations. He stated, “While the beam lift is a significant milestone, ensuring safety for workers and motorists is paramount.” Following this weekend’s activities, any remaining construction work is anticipated to cause minimal disruption.
Traffic Detours and Alternatives
Drivers are encouraged to avoid the construction area, opting instead for alternative routes or off-peak travel times. A signed diversion route will be operational throughout the closure:
- Westbound vehicles should exit at Junction 18, follow the A46 towards Bath, then A420 towards Warmley.
- From there, traffic should connect to the A4174, leading to the M32 at Junction 1 to return to Junction 19 of the M4.
- Eastbound drivers will follow the same diversion in reverse.
Public Transportation Updates
National Express services will continue to operate through alternate routes. However, several stops will be temporarily suspended, including:
- Cardiff (Gabalfa)
- Cardiff University
- Cardiff Gate Business Park
- University of West England
- Bridgwater (504 service only)
- Chepstow
- Reading Mereoak P&R (504 and 508 service only)
Customers travelling during this period should allow extra time for their journeys and consider adjusting their travel plans if necessary. National Highways appreciates the patience of all road users as they work towards enhancing the safety and reliability of this important route.
