Oswestry’s Historic Railway Station Restoration Nominated for Prestigious National Award

Oswestry’s historic railway station has been nominated for a National Railway Heritage Award due to its recent restoration. The project was executed by local artisans from Phillips and Curry Ltd and focused on revitalizing the building’s exterior, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Details of the Restoration

The restoration work, carried out between July 2024 and May 2025, included several key upgrades:

  • Removal of asbestos tiles
  • Installation of Welsh slate roofs
  • Restoration of windows and doors in the Cambrian Railway’s colors
  • Addition of nesting boxes for swifts under the eaves
  • Installation of bat roosting tiles along the roof

Craftsmen worked diligently on a budget of £1 million, yet achieved remarkable results. Judges of the award have praised the effort, noting the quality of work and contributions from local artisans.

Community Impact and Support

The restoration benefited from funding through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Shropshire Council, which together contributed £765,250 from two sources: the UKSPF (Community and Place) and the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF).

Roger Evans, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for finance, expressed pride in the project, emphasizing the cultural significance of the building. He stated that the successful restoration showcases both local craftsmanship and community values.

A Historic Landmark

The Grade II-listed building, which originally opened in 1866, ceased operations in 1966. It was neglected for many years until Shropshire Council acquired it early in 2023. Currently, the ground floor serves as a rental space for Cambrian Heritage Railways, a local charity dedicated to preserving railway history.

The winners of the National Railway Heritage Award will be announced at a ceremony in London on December 3, 2025. With its rich history and revitalized structure, Oswestry’s railway station stands as a testament to local heritage and restoration efforts.
