Foster + Partners Reveals Ambitious Plans for New Oxford Science Campus and Train Station

Foster + Partners has unveiled an ambitious plan for a new Oxford Science Campus and a train station. This initiative is backed by American billionaire Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle Corporation. The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) aims to create a vibrant hub of innovation on the outskirts of Oxford.

Oxford Science Park Expansion

The planned EIT campus will feature laboratories and office spaces at the Oxford Science Park. Recently, EIT purchased part of the estate, with plans emphasizing sustainability and innovation.

Development Plans

  • The campus covers 190,000 m².
  • 70% of the area will be green spaces.
  • Key facilities will include:
    • A state-of-the-art auditorium.
    • Research and education spaces.
    • Laboratories for generative biology, plant sciences, robotics, and AI.

Earlier in January 2023, proposals were submitted for a new cancer research facility and oncology clinic, laying the groundwork for this extensive development.

Train Station at Littlemore

In addition to the campus, a new train station at Littlemore is part of the project. This development coincides with plans to reopen the Cowley branch line, which hasn’t been operational for 60 years. The proposal was announced on October 23, 2023, by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who allocated £120 million for the project’s restoration.

5th Studio collaborated with various councils and Network Rail to support the business case for this railway line’s revival. Network Rail is also seeking an architect for redeveloping Oxford’s main railway station.

Campus Features

Foster + Partners’ design includes two primary sites, connected by a 250-meter timber walkway featuring a dome-shaped educational space known as The Nest. The design also incorporates:

  • A partial retention of the Littlemore House, a 1902 hospital building.
  • An oncology clinic and a large auditorium.
  • A library within a geodesic dome.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Recently, planning permission was secured for renovating the Grade II-listed The Eagle and Child pub in Oxford, known for its association with authors J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. EIT purchased the historic site from St John’s College in October 2023.

Timeline and Future Goals

The construction of the Oxford campus is expected to be completed by 2027. This facility will serve as the second Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine, after the one established in Los Angeles, designed by RIOS.

As Larry Ellison continues to expand his influence in the tech and medical fields, this venture promises to significantly enhance the scientific landscape in Oxford.
