Fighting Tigers Protest Exclusion from Playoffs
The Ironton Fighting Tigers football team, along with their supporters, protested outside the Ironton School Board office on Friday. Their demonstration aimed to highlight their exclusion from the upcoming state playoffs, following a decision from the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).
Fighting for Playoff Inclusion
This protest took place after the team received the disappointing news on Thursday. Senior player Zayne Williams expressed frustration over the decision. “We are out here fighting for our right to play in the state playoffs,” he stated. Williams criticized the decision-makers, suggesting it was unfair to the players who have dedicated their time and effort throughout the season.
Support from Families and Community
Megan Cockrell, the mother of quarterback Kayden Edwards, joined the protest to voice her support. She highlighted the hard work and dedication of the players. “These kids did nothing wrong. They deserve to play,” Cockrell asserted, emphasizing the disappointment felt by the team and its supporters.
The protest was organized quickly, within hours of the team’s notification. “My son called me hyperventilating after practice when they received the news,” Cockrell recounted. The urgency for action prompted many parents and fans to rally in support of the Fighting Tigers.
Next Steps and OHSAA Response
The Ohio High School Athletic Association has been approached for further details regarding the playoff exclusion. They indicated that more information would be provided later on the same day.
The community stands united in their support for the Fighting Tigers. “If needed, we will continue to come down here,” Cockrell stated, showing resolve in their quest for justice for the team.
