Hermoso Admits to Tears Over Return to Spain Squad
Jenni Hermoso has shared her emotional experience upon being recalled to the Spanish national football team. This call-up from new manager Sonia Bermudez marks her return after a year-long absence.
Significant Comeback for Hermoso
Hermoso, recognized as Spain’s all-time leading scorer with 57 goals, last represented her country in October 2024. During that match, she played 15 minutes against Canada.
Since her last appearance, Hermoso has been involved in the trial of former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales. Rubiales faced charges for kissing Hermoso without her consent after Spain’s victory in the 2023 World Cup final.
Overcoming Adversity
Despite her participation in all six qualifiers leading up to Euro 2025, Hermoso was not named in the final squad for the tournament. However, her recent call-up has reignited her passion for playing with the national team.
In her heartfelt statement to Radio Television Espanola, she expressed her excitement, saying, “I have to admit that I cried. It was a moment that I have waited a long time for.” She emphasized how hard she has worked to earn this opportunity.
Looking Ahead
Hermoso stated, “To continue at this level and to enjoy football with the national team is the reward for all that work.” She is now preparing for Spain’s upcoming match against Sweden in the Women’s Nations League semi-final.
In addition to Hermoso, Barcelona defender Mapi Leon has also been re-included in the squad after her last appearance in 2022. This change comes after Bermudez took over as head coach following Montse Tome’s departure from the RFEF in August.
Reflecting on her journey, Hermoso shared, “For me, it’s been tireless. I haven’t stopped staying strong because I faced some pretty tough moments. I feel very proud of myself for this comeback.”
