Church Expands with 55 New Missions by 2026

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced an ambitious expansion plan, introducing 55 new missions worldwide by July 1, 2026. This increase will elevate the total number of missions to 506, marking a historic moment for the organization.

Overview of the Expansion

On October 24, 2025, the Church’s President Dallin H. Oaks shared this information via a news release. He highlighted the commitment of young members who continue to spread the gospel worldwide, impacting countless lives through their missionary work.

Growing Numbers of Missionaries

The Church has experienced significant growth in its missionary workforce. The total number of missionaries has surged from over 65,000 at the end of 2022 to more than 84,000 as of late 2023. These missionaries operate in over 150 countries and teach in more than 60 languages.

Adjustments and Goals

Elder Quentin L. Cook, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, explained that the new missions would help balance the distribution of missionaries. This adjustment allows mission leaders to offer improved mentorship and support to those they lead.
