Thousands set to benefit from unexpected social welfare changes this week
Thousands of social welfare recipients in Ireland are set to receive their payments earlier this week. This change comes in anticipation of the October bank holiday, which occurs on Monday, October 27, 2025. Various services such as banks, post offices, and Intreo centres will be closed on that day.
Early Payments Ahead of October Bank Holiday
Those who typically receive payments on Mondays will see their funds deposited on either Friday, October 24, or Saturday, October 25. This adjustment provides recipients with financial support just before the long weekend, offering a much-needed boost during a challenging cost of living period.
Excluded Payments: Child Benefit
It’s important to note that not all payments are affected by this change. The Child Benefit, which is €140 per month for parents or guardians of children under 16, remains unaffected. Payments for Child Benefit will continue on the first Tuesday of November, specifically November 4, 2025. This benefit extends to children aged 16 to 18 if they are in full-time education or training, or if they have a disability.
Future Social Welfare Changes
The regular social welfare payment schedule will resume on Tuesday, October 28, after the bank holiday weekend. Recent government announcements regarding Budget 2026 indicate further changes:
- The Christmas Bonus will be distributed to around 1.5 million long-term welfare recipients in December 2025, providing a 100% bonus based on their weekly payment.
- An increase of €10 in core social welfare payments will start in January 2026.
- The Carer’s Allowance income disregard will rise, while the Domiciliary Care Allowance will increase by €20, reaching €380 per month.
- The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is being expanded to include two and three-year-olds.
- Fuel Allowance will extend to recipients of the Working Family Payment, with the weekly rate increasing from €33 to €38.
