Fox Sports Enhances World Series Broadcasts with AR Graphics

Fox Sports is set to enhance its broadcasts of the 2025 World Series by introducing groundbreaking augmented reality (AR) graphics. This initiative includes the launch of the Swing Tracker and Umpire PitchTrack features, designed to create a more engaging viewing experience.

Innovative Augmented Reality Features

• Swing Tracker: Visualizes the swing path and exit velocity using Statcast data.
• Umpire PitchTrack: Displays the strike zone outline from the Ump Cam perspective.

Zac Fields, Fox Sports’ Senior Vice President of Graphic Tech & Innovation, highlighted the network’s aim to tell immersive stories within the game. “We try to stay on live shots as much as possible,” he remarked, emphasizing the integration of statistics with video.

Technology and Camera Integration

The Swing Tracker employs a high-frame-rate camera system, utilizing a total of 10 cameras during the World Series. This feature presents a multi-colored graphic to exhibit details such as bat speed and swing direction. Conversely, the Umpire PitchTrack relies on advanced Statcast data sourced from Hawk-Eye cameras. This system, developed in collaboration with UK-based Bolt6, facilitates the accurate rendering of the strike zone, even when the umpire’s viewpoint shifts.

Enhancements to Camera Work

Brad Cheney, Fox’s Vice President of Field Operations and Engineering, emphasized the importance of comprehensive audio and video capture. The upcoming series will utilize 20 operated cameras alongside over a dozen remote cameras. In addition, 55 microphones will enhance the sound quality of the broadcasts.

• Improved Audio Capture: The increase in base size allows for larger microphones, capturing clearer sound during plays.
• Action Around Bases: This change has extracted more audio detail, enriching the viewer’s experience.
