South Side Business Owners Report Surge in Crime Recently

Business owners on the South Side of San Antonio have reported a worrying surge in crime in recent weeks. Local establishments have faced various incidents, prompting concerns about safety and security.

Recent Crime Incidents

Rudy Lopez, the manager of Pica Pica Plaza, described a disturbing event where palm trees outside his business were set on fire early one Tuesday morning. Similar issues have affected other businesses along Pleasanton Road.

Vanessa Salazar, owner of La Sorpresa restaurant, has experienced numerous break-ins, totaling four incidents in just two months. “I came in, and everything was a mess right here where the register was,” said Salazar. She expressed frustration, noting that the intruders seemed intent on causing damage rather than stealing.

Community Concerns

Salazar reported her suspicion that a homeless individual in the area might be involved. She stated, “You’re just hearing all down Pleasanton, there have been break-ins, too many.” Her plea for action highlights a growing sense of vulnerability among local business owners.

  • Rudy Lopez’s Pica Pica Plaza harmed by arson.
  • Vanessa Salazar’s La Sorpresa has been broken into four times.
  • Owner of Lord’s Barbershop reports similar criminal activity.
  • Total damages from break-ins exceed $3,000 for both Salazar and the barbershop.

Community Response

Jack Daniel, a regular customer at Lord’s Barbershop, voiced his concerns about the ongoing criminal activity. He noted that it seems to involve someone familiar with the local area and its businesses. “It has to be someone that knows the target,” he stated.

In light of these events, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has advised affected businesses to connect with a San Antonio Fear Free Environment (SAFFE) officer. These officers can provide Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) recommendations to enhance security, such as improving lighting and landscaping.

City Officials’ Involvement

District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis J. Viagran’s office has acknowledged the concern but has not yet provided a statement. A spokesperson indicated that Viagran would soon be briefed on the situation and its implications for public safety.

Lopez urged the community to remain alert and to report any information regarding these incidents. He expressed empathy for potential offenders, stating, “Whoever it was… we forgive you. Just stay away from Pica and just don’t do it to us and don’t do it to other communities.” His comments reflect a community united in its desire for safety amid rising crime rates.
