Former RTÉ Editor Fr Dermod McCarthy Known for His Role in Ben Dunne Kidnap Release Passes Away

Fr Dermod McCarthy, a significant figure in Irish media and religious circles, has passed away at the age of 83. He was well-known for his contributions to RTÉ, where he served as the editor of religious programmes and played a crucial role in securing the release of businessman Ben Dunne during a kidnapping incident.

Key Contributions and Career

Fr McCarthy was a pivotal member of the team behind the influential Radharc series, which began in 1965. This series produced over 400 programmes filmed in 75 countries. Notable episodes included:

  • The first televised report on the Nigerian famine affecting the Biafran people in the late 1960s.
  • Smuggling film footage out of Brazil.
  • The last interview with St Oscar Romero before his assassination in March 1980.
  • Filming under dangerous conditions, including flying through anti-aircraft fire over Africa.

Involvement in the Ben Dunne Kidnap Crisis

In 1981, Fr McCarthy became directly involved in a high-stakes situation when businessman Ben Dunne was kidnapped by an IRA gang. Having officiated at Dunne’s wedding to Mary, Fr McCarthy made a heartfelt television appeal to the kidnappers. He urged them to “cut their losses and get out fast,” following a foiled ransom attempt. His efforts culminated in the successful release of Dunne in the early hours of October 18, 1981.

Later Life and Legacy

After his tenure at RTÉ, which lasted until 2007, Fr McCarthy served at Dublin’s Pro-Cathedral, where he was appointed as administrator. He originally hailed from Ballinamore, County Leitrim, and began his education at Mount St Joseph in Co Tipperary before his ordination in 1966. Despite his illness in recent times, his impact on religious broadcasting and community service remains significant.

Fr Dermod McCarthy’s legacy endures as a respected priest, editor, and humanitarian who influenced many lives through his work in media and his compassionate outreach efforts.
