Rev Fr Dermod McCarthy, an influential figure in both faith and community, passed away on October 22, 2025. He died at Our Lady’s Manor in Dalkey, County Dublin, surrounded by care and compassion.

Originally from Ballinamore in County Leitrim, Fr Dermod was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Vera McCarthy, and his nephew, Michael Darragh. He was a beloved Administrator of the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin and served as the Head of Religious Affairs at RTÉ, where he left a significant impact.

Family and Community

Fr Dermod is remembered fondly by his family and community. He is survived by his sister Beth (Earley), brothers Mel and Michael, brother-in-law Joe, and sister-in-law Rovena. His legacy continues through his nieces and nephews: Alan, Eoin, Ronan, Kathy, Breifne, Ruth, Muireann, and Colm, along with his grandnephews and grandnieces.

Funeral Arrangements

Visitation will take place at Quinn’s Funeral Home in Glasthule, Co. Dublin, on Thursday, October 23rd, from 5 PM to 7 PM. A Mass of Farewell will be celebrated at the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Dalkey on Friday, October 24th, at 12 noon. After the Mass, his remains will be taken privately to Ballinamore.

On Friday evening, Fr Dermod’s remains will repose at Smith’s Funeral Home in Ballinamore from 7 PM to 9 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 25th, at St. Patrick’s Church in Ballinamore at 12 noon. Following the Mass, he will be laid to rest in the family plot at Fenagh Abbey Cemetery in Fenagh, County Leitrim.

Remembering Fr Dermod McCarthy

The community, led by the Archbishop of Dublin, Dermot Farrell, and fellow priests, will unite to honor Fr Dermod’s memory. Condolences can be shared online, and a condolence book will be available upon request from the funeral director. Shannonside Northern Sound extends its sympathy to all who are grieving this loss.
