Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca Highlights Marc Guiu’s Progress and Opportunity

Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s current head coach, recently addressed the development of young striker Marc Guiu. Earlier this month, Guiu expressed concerns about his lack of playing time following training sessions. The 19-year-old was recalled from a season-long loan at Sunderland at the close of the summer transfer window to compensate for injuries within the team.

Training Concerns and Subsequent Improvements

Maresca revealed that during a meeting on October 4, prior to the Liverpool game, he informed Guiu of his unsatisfactory training performance. The coaching staff felt that Guiu’s training lacked the intensity required for game preparation. Maresca pointed out that the change in Guiu’s attitude towards training was essential for his integration into the first team.

Maresca stated, “We had a conversation, and I told him he needed to improve his training habits. I was not happy with his performance in drills.” This candid feedback seems to have prompted a positive response from the young forward.

Recent Performance Boost

Since the conversation, Guiu has made significant progress. He has participated in three consecutive matches for Chelsea, notably scoring in a recent 5-1 victory over Ajax. Maresca noted, “His training has been fantastic. He is now working very well, and he is absolutely ready to start against Sunderland.” This signifies an encouraging turn in Guiu’s development.

Injury Updates and Team Changes

In other team news, Liam Delap is making a quicker-than-expected recovery from a hamstring injury. Initially projected to return in November after sustaining the injury two months ago, he has recently resumed training. Maresca confirmed that Delap could be in contention for the Carabao Cup match against Wolverhampton on October 25.

  • Player Updates:
    • Marc Guiu has improved training and performance.
    • Liam Delap expected to return by October 25.

Maresca mentioned that the medical department had been encouraged by Delap’s progress, illustrating the club’s ongoing commitment to player rehabilitation and performance optimization.
