Heavy Weekend Rain Expected Across Bay Area: Forecast Details
The Bay Area is preparing for an intense weekend as heavy rain is forecasted. The region is currently experiencing the aftermath of an atmospheric river, affecting parts of Northern California and Oregon. Meteorologists from the National Weather Service (NWS) predict that most of the Bay Area, with the exception of the South Bay, will see some rainfall.
Rain Forecast Across the Bay Area
According to NWS meteorologist Rick Canepa, a significant surface low pressure is influencing the weather. Areas near Mount Tamalpais and other parts of the North Bay may receive at least one inch of rain. In contrast, Alameda and Contra Costa counties can expect much less, potentially up to a quarter-inch. Rainfall amounts in the South Bay are expected to be minimal, possibly just a few hundredths of an inch.
Safety Precautions and Beach Conditions
With heavy rain expected, the Bay Area’s beaches are facing hazardous conditions. A beach hazards statement was issued on Friday morning and will remain in effect until Monday. Waves could reach heights of up to 20 feet, prompting the NWS to advise residents to avoid rocky areas and piers.
- Beach Hazards Statement: In effect until 3 a.m. Monday
- Maximum Wave Height: Up to 20 feet
- Visibility Issues: Dense fog reported in North Bay valleys
Continued Weather Developments
As the weekend progresses, a second wave from the atmospheric river is expected to bring additional rainfall late Sunday night into Monday. Canepa noted, “It’s likely to be highly variable,” indicating that precipitation amounts could differ significantly across the region.
The entire weather system is anticipated to move out of the area by Monday morning, allowing for gradual clearing and a return to seasonal temperatures. Overall, the Bay Area is witnessing a particularly rainy October, further underscoring the importance of monitoring local forecasts and staying safe.
