OU Adds Wall Padding Following Recent Injury Incident
Oklahoma University is taking preventive measures to enhance player safety by adding wall padding around Owen Field. This decision follows a recent injury incident involving wide receiver Keontez Lewis.
Incident Overview
On October 4, during a game against Kent State, Lewis suffered an injury when he collided with an unpadded brick wall. This accident occurred in the first quarter of Oklahoma’s 44-0 victory.
Details of the Injury
The injury transpired after a pass from quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. was slightly overthrown. Lewis, in an attempt to make the catch, went headfirst into the wall located behind the end zone. This area had previously lacked proper padding, raising safety concerns.
Response and Modifications
In light of this incident, the university announced it would install padding to the walls surrounding both end zones and the sidelines outside the team bench areas. This modification is slated to be completed ahead of the upcoming game against the Ole Miss Rebels.
